The year end celebrations hit differently last night because the year 2020 was like none other we’ve had in decades. My husband and I reminisced about the things that we are thankful for as the year came to a close. Like millions of others, we had a year of highs and lows. However, we are extremely thankful that we are happy, healthy, and together as a family. Our kids fell asleep right before the clock struck midnight. So, Marcus and I went to the basement and celebrated by taking pictures, having a cocktail, and dancing.
2020 Highs and Lows
I had a funny feeling that 2020 was going to be a little different. First, it started off with the unexpected death of a basketball great, Kobe Bryant. He died on my birthday-January 26th. Then the whispers of a virus that we had no clue was about to cause total devastation around the world. We’ve came to know this virus as COVID19 and it caused almost complete shutdowns of major industries. In March and April, people started losing their jobs and companies began to crumble. Memorial day weekend, the world witnessed the death of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, by a police officer.
George Floyd’s tragic death was proceeded by much civil unrest. There were protests and marches around the world in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Companies and organizations started taking a serious look at their diversity and inclusion programs. Then, we loss two Civil Rights leaders and icons on the same day. Congressman John Lewis and Rev. Cordy Tindell “CT” Vivian died within hours of one another in July. One thing is for sure, change happened in 2020. Moreover, a tremendous change was the United States Democratic ticket. The Vice President-Elect is a black woman!! Kamala Harris!! Lastly, we concluded the year with the roll out of Pfizer’s FDA approved COVID19 vaccine.
Moving Forward into 2021
I am hopeful that the vaccine will help us start living a somewhat normal life again. I’m sure 2021 will still see us wearing face masks and working more from home. But, my prayer is that we will be able to spend time with and adequately provide for our families again. I don’t know about you, but I need a vacation! So, I’m looking forward to traveling more in the near future! Lastly, we’re anticipating our kids going back to school in the fall because they’ve been in virtual school since March. Yes, it felt like I spent five years in 2020, but I’m grateful that I’m here to see 2021.
Happy New Year everyone and please remember to be safe!
